Lao Fashion Week & Young Designers Development Project

Distinguished Guests,

Ladies & Gentlemen,

Lao Fashion Week is taking place for the first time in Laos and it will be the first international fashion event of the country, which is aimed to take place and develop every year in the years to come. It will be an annual event of the year, which will help putting Laos to the international fashion industry.

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to H.E. Mr. & Mrs. Yves Carmona and everyone at French Embassy, for such a great support and for being a part to make a history.

My sincere thanks to all our partners, sponsors and everyone who is involved in the Lao Fashion Week to help making this historical event a successful one.
Thank you.

Michel Somsanouk Mixay
Chairman of Board Committee
Lao Fashion Week & Young Designers Development Project

Distinguished Guests,

Ladies & Gentlemen,

I am honoured to be a chair person of the board committee of the Lao Fashion Week and its Young Designers Development Programme.

Not only the Lao Fashion Week will create the platform for Lao designers to showcase their talents and works, creating opportunities for Lao brands to meet international fashion stage and developing the textile and fashion scenes in Laos. Its Lao Young Designers Development Project will also help encouraging young Laotians who are talented but lack of opportunity, to have chance to develop their career in fashion and design industry.

After the fashion week, we will launch the design contest throughout Laos. The committee will select the winner, who will be fully sponsored to attend the Lao Fashion Week next year, and the years to come, we expect to be able to send them to advance their knowledge in the training courses with design academies in international levels.

Address by the French Ambassador to Lao PDR

Dear friends,

Dear Pany Saignavongs,

I would like to extend a particularly warm welcome to you, Madame Minister of Silk. I know how much energy you have invested for this very first Vientiane "fashion week" to take its place among the "semaines de la mode" – as we say in French – in Paris, London, Milan and New York.

Considering the number of guests tonight, it is already a success. I have no doubt this success will be confirmed by the next two evenings. We jointly imagined this reception, in a spirit of exciting and gratifying partnership. The Residence de France welcomes this French - but open to the world - art that fashion represents, with Lao or from Lao descent designers, like my fellow compatriot Nittaya who already knows these gardens.

Tonight, the Residence also hosts one more French art : gastronomy, as our partnership extends to a tasting of French wines. This will also be a first for the Residence, at least since we arrived, Rika and me.
After the traditional glass of Champagne (I remind you that only Champagne from the French region of Champagne is entitled to be called ’Champagne’) and thanks to the distributor of French wines Stéphanie 888, whom I would like to thank, our guests will be invited to taste 5 wines. All of them are produced in the Bordeaux region by the Rivière family, coincidentally just a few kilometers from where I was born and raised. These wines are :

- “Clos des Menuts”, a Saint Émilion grand cru classé, a typical red wine made from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc – I mention it for those who pay attention to the grape varieties , although I personally consider the “terroir” as the most important.
- Two red wines from the Lussac Saint-Emilion appellation : “Château Haut Piquat” and “Château Picampeau”, with the same grape varieties.
- Finally, “Château de Callac”, red and white, from the Graves appellation. The white wine, unlike red ones, is made from Sauvignon and Sémillon.

As on every special occasion, the team of the Residence has prepared dishes that will best fit with these wines. I cannot mention everyone, but I thank all of those who came to help us tonight. I would like to welcome among us the young students of LANITH, the training institution which is beginning to earn a reputation for excellence.
Pany, you know better that anyone how chatty ambassadors can be, so I will stop here and invite you to continue this presentation.
Good evening to you all !
