Francophonie Festival 2014

On March 20 (in Pakse) and on March 22 (in Vientiane), Laos will celebrate its attachment to the Francophonie. Many festivities will punctuate these two days : everyone is welcome !

Every year, the full 220 million French speakers and Francophiles around the world unite in March. This month is traditionally dedicated to the Francophonie celebrations in each of the 77 member states and governments of the International Organization of the Francophonie (OIF).

Since the accession of Lao PDR to the OIF in 1991, dozens of events were organized every year in Vientiane as well in the provinces to celebrate the values of the Francophonie. This is an opportunity for all Lao French speakers and OIF member states nationals to unite and highlight the multiculturalism inherent in the notion of Francophonie.

This year Laos will celebrate the Francophonie on two occasions.

On Thursday, March 20, the International Day of the Francophonie will be celebrated in Pakse. In the presence of HE Phongsavath Boupha, Minister to the President’s Office in charge of Francophonie, and HE Yves Carmona, French Ambassador to Lao PDR, a great show will be presented by students in French classes of all ages.

On Saturday, March 22, in Vientiane, the Francophone Festival will take place on the campus of Sokpaluang. For the first time, the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education and Sports, the French Embassy, the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) and the Asia Pacific Regional Francophone Centre (CREFAP) have joined forces to organize this event. The Festival aims to gather a wide audience : French and Lao speakers Lao nationals, French and non-French speaking expatriates during a day dedicated to promote of the plurality of the Lao Francophonie.

Throughout the day, you will be able to attend amateur and professional theatre performances, dance and poetry shows, dance workshops, storytelling, sports competitions, a flashmob and concerts in Lao and French languages.

This day, filled with many activities and totally free, aims to be family-oriented, festive and where everyone is obviously welcome to come along !
